Former India Spinner Dilip Doshi Dies Aged 77 Due To Cardiac Arrest

Doshi is among the rare cricketers to achieve a century of wickets after debuting past 30. 

Former India left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi died due to cardiac arrest in London on Monday (June 23). A late bloomer in international cricket, Doshi debuted in Test cricket in 1979 at age 31, following Bishen Singh Bedi’s retirement. Over his 33 Tests until 1983, he claimed 114 wickets, including six five-wicket hauls, with a remarkable 100 wickets in just 28 Tests, showcasing his prowess on home soil. Notably, Doshi is among the rare cricketers to achieve a century of wickets after debuting past 30.

His Test debut was sensational, with figures of 6/103 that secured a draw against a formidable Australian side in 1979. In the same series, he delivered a match-defining 8/103, guiding India to a memorable innings victory.

Beyond his cricketing achievements, Doshi was a vibrant personality with eclectic interests. A close friend of Mick Jagger, he attended over 400 Rolling Stones concerts, reflecting his passion for music. As a trailblazing entrepreneur, he introduced Mont Blanc to India in the late 1990s, marking one of the earliest entries of a luxury brand into the country.

Besides being a successful leg spinner he was a friend of Mick Jagger and was known to have attended more than 400 Rolling Stones' concert, and also brought Mont Blanc to India, among the earliest luxury brands to set up shop in India in the late 1990s.
