Sarfaraz Khan, the Indian cricketer known for his prolific run-scoring in domestic red-ball cricket, has stunned fans and critics alike by shedding 17 kilograms in just over two months. The 27-year-old Mumbai batter, who made his Test debut against England in February 2024, has faced persistent scrutiny over his fitness. Despite scoring 371 runs in six Tests, including a century and three half-centuries, Sarfaraz has yet to cement a permanent spot in the Indian squad. His exclusion from the ongoing England Test series in July 2025 sparked debate, with former cricketers like Harbhajan Singh advocating for his inclusion. Undeterred, Sarfaraz transformed rejection into motivation, embarking on a remarkable fitness journey that has redefined his physique and career prospects.
The transformation began in May 2025, when Sarfaraz was selected for the India A tour of England. Guided by his father and coach, Naushad Khan, he adopted a disciplined lifestyle overhaul. “We have controlled our diet a lot. We have stopped eating roti, rice, etc. We haven’t eaten roti or rice at home for 1 to 1.5 months. We eat broccoli, carrots, cucumber, salad, and green vegetable salad. Along with that, we eat grilled fish, grilled chicken, boiled chicken, boiled egg, etc.,” Naushad told.
The family also eliminated sugar, refined flour, and bakery items, replacing traditional tea and coffee with green tea and green coffee. Sarfaraz even gave up his beloved chicken and mutton biryani, a significant sacrifice for the young batter.
Beyond diet, Sarfaraz committed to a rigorous fitness regimen. He trained daily at the Mumbai Cricket Association’s BKC facility, spending at least an hour in the gym six days a week, jogging for nearly an hour, and incorporating 30-minute swimming sessions. This holistic approach, combining high-protein, low-carb meals with strength training and cardiovascular conditioning, enhanced his stamina, agility, and muscle recovery.
Naushad, who lost 12 kilograms himself to delay a knee replacement, emphasized the family’s collective effort.
Sarfaraz’s transformation has garnered widespread praise. Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen lauded his dedication on X, stating, “Outstanding effort, young man! Huge congrats, and I’m sure it’s going to lead to better and more consistent performances on the field.”
Fans echoed this sentiment, with posts on X calling it a “champion’s comeback.” Despite missing the England series, Sarfaraz’s 92-run knock for India A and his leaner physique signal a renewed focus. As he continues to pile on domestic runs, his fitness overhaul sends a clear message to selectors: Sarfaraz Khan is ready for a comeback.
