On May 23 of every year, India and all the other countries celebrate World Wrestling Day. But hasn’t been a happy one for the Indian fans this time around. Sushil Kumar, one of the greatest Indian wrestlers ever to have taken the field for India in wrestling, has been arrested by The Delhi Police.
He has been involved in one of the high-profile murders of another wrestler a couple of weeks back. He has been absconding and evading arrests since then. It was known that Kumar got into a brawl in the parking area of the Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi. Sagar Rana, a fellow wrestler of Kumar, might have gotten into a verbal altercation with the latter. Kumar wasn’t able to handle getting insulted and abused by a fellow wrestler.
Along with a few of his friends, he went to Rana’s house in Model Town, where the fight started. They got into another brawl on May 4, 2021, in the parking area of the Chhatrasal stadium. Rana’s friends, who were also the witnesses of this event, told the Police that Kumar had killed their friend.
Since then, Kumar has been switching his locations repeatedly to prevent himself from getting arrested. He was known to switch between states like Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh as well. Such an absconding act of his proves that he has something majorly related to the Rana. The witnesses also confirm that the Olympic wrestler was the murderer, and his arrest should be made as soon as possible. Today, he was arrested from a location nearby Delhi. The Delhi Police have done a commendable job, but they still have to find out and investigate whether Kumar was the murderer or not. The Delhi Police had announced a reward of ₹ 1 lakh for information leading to the arrest of Sushil Kumar, who had since been on the run. Another reward of ₹ 50,000 was announced for Kumar’s arrest.
It has been a dark couple of weeks for the Indian wrestling fans and their fraternity. Such an incident is an absolute shame, and it would take many guts to believe this happened. Kumar won the bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and got a silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics.
