The audiences, present at the Manchester United’s legendary Old Trafford Stadium, recently witnessed an action-packed game and an eventual win by team England against the ‘Rest of the World’ at the Soccer Aid event. A brainchild of Robbie Williams and Jonathan Wilkes, this thrilling event, held on the 5th of June, 2016, was also broadcast live on ITV where the eventual score was 3 – 2.
Since 10 years, this Soccer Aid is held every two years and brings together an amalgamation of the biggest stars from a variety of fields such as sports, music, films and television. The real goal of this charity game is to raise money, support and awareness for the UNICEF, a leading children’s organization.
This year the England team was led by José Mourinho, the Ambassador for Hublot, assisted by the UNICEF UK Ambassador Robbie Williams and was up against the Rest of the World team, led by Claudio Ranieri and assisted by Niall Horan of One Direction fame. The guest of honour for Soccer Aid was, none other than, Pelé while Howard Webb, Dida, Cannavaro and Edgar Davids were the respective referees, on and off the field.
Jermain Defoe, from team England, scored the winning goal that led to its victory and the ‘Man of the Match’, Mark Wright was awarded a Hublot Wall Clock.
One of the major features of these games is the presence of Hublot’s Referee Boards on the pitches. These boards are now an essential feature of major leagues, introduced for the first time in the FIFA World Cup 2014, and now used as the fourth official to indicate extra time and player changes.
