Jannik Sinner added another feather to cap off his momentous year with his maiden Nitto ATP Finals trophy in front of home fans in Turin, by beating Taylor Fritz in straight sets. It's been an eventful year for Sinner in which he added two grand slams to his tally, and finished as the number one ranked player, but also got embroiled in the doping controversy that still hangs over his head. He is also the first Italian tennis player to have ever won the Nitto ATP Finals.
Sinner won all five matches without dropping en route to his ATP Finals championship. The Italian has been poised as the new star of the post-Big-Three era, and his thumping victory in Turin only solidified his status. Last year, he reached the final where he failed to topple Novak Djokovic.
Sinner began his season as world number four and climbed up to the summit of the ATP ranking in June. Today, he is World Number 1 and given the run he is on it would take some serious efforts to knock him off the top.
Jannik Sinner Did What ‘The Big Three’ Couldn't
Sinner started off the year by winning his maiden grand slam at the Australian Open. He overcame a two-set deficit against Daniil Medvedev to win the final. While the next two majors were won by his rival Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner came strongly to take the US Open, becoming the only man in the 21st century to win his first two majors in the same year. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer have won 20 grand slams or more, but even they were unable to win their first two slams in the same year.
How Much Prize Money Did Jannik Sinner Get By Winning the ATP Finals?
By not losing even a single match in the season finale, Sinner took home what's the biggest paycheck in the history of sports. Already a multi-million star, Sinner got $4.8 million (₹40.46 crore) for winning the ATP finals. Against opponents ranked below 10 in the ATP rankings, Sinner has won 17 matches and lost merely five. In fact, he only lost one of his last eleven matches against top ten players. If he starts off next year on the same note, he'll quickly become one of the richest tennis players in the world.
