Virat Kohli made his mark after taking up the captaincy of the Indian cricket team in 2014. He hasn’t brought home the World Cup yet, but he has shattered records once held by cricketing legends. The latest one being the record held by India’s previous captain, MS Dhoni. 

Virat Kohli on Monday became India’s most successful captain in Test cricket after their 257-run victory over West Indies in the 2nd Test in Jamaica. Dhoni had 27 wins from 60 Tests to his name as the Indian captain, while Kohli now has 28 from just 48 games. This new achievement puts him in the third position on the list of skippers with most wins after 48 games behind Steve Waugh (36) and Ricky Ponting (33), said a report by India Today. 

In a statement given after the match, Kohli reportedly said, “Being the most successful Test captain? It’s a by-product of the team we have. Our bowlers are amazing. Shami was great, Ishant bowling his heart out, Jadeja bowling a long spell. Captaincy is just a ‘C’ in front of your name. It’s a collective effort.” 

Kohli also took this opportunity to praise his team’s performance that led them to a glorious victory.

“Pretty comprehensive again. Played really good cricket over four days. Getting result in the manner that you want is crucial. Were in some tricky situations. Took a lot of character from the boys collectively.

“For us, it’s just the start of the Championship. Whatever’s happened in the past is irrelevant. Look forward to keep continuing playing good cricket,” Kohli said.

India won by 257 runs on Day 4 to sweep the series 2-0 and earn their spot at the top of the ICC World Test Championship points table. This marks India’s first clean-sweep in a Test series in the Caribbean.
