At the launch of Motorola’s brand new smartphone earlier this week, the company called out battery life, fast charging and latest OS updates among the key deal breakers for Indian consumers. The Motorola One Power becomes the first Moto device to ride on the Android One Platform and has been launched in partnership with Google. The Android One Platform ensures Moto consumers don’t just get the latest Android updates but also the most current security patches. The Motorola One Power is more than just about its Android One affiliation.

We first spotted the One Power at IFA Berlin less than a month ago. There’s a lot riding on this device for Motorola and it’s Rs 15,999 price point is clear indication that this device will battle with the likes of the Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Nokia 6.1 Plus.

The One Power bears a striking similarity with the iPhone XS. It’s probably the placement and size of the notch. The Motorola logo is emblazoned on the chin and you will find the trademark M within the conveniently placed fingerprint sensor on the rear of the device. The design language is clean and the slight curves make the device easy to grip. The metal build adds to this – it’s certainly less prone to drops than all-glass devices. It boils down to form vs. function – the Nokia 6.1 Plus certainly looks chicer and it’s significantly lighter too. The One Power is easy to hold but it’s certainly heavy – almost 200 gms.

It’s all screen and then there’s the Notch. Two trends that have defined the smartphone display through much of 2018. The 6.2-inch FHD+ display (1080 x 2246 pixels / 402 PPI) boasts of an aspect ratio of 18.7:9. It’s quite immersive, Motorola manages to keep the screen: body ratio well above 80%. The large screen gets a boost with speakers that punch above their weight. The sound output is impressive and among the best in this price segment.

A Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 Processor and 4GB of RAM are at the heart of this device. It’s the same processor as the Nokia 6.1 Plus and the AnTuTu Benchmark results were similar in our tests. I experienced a couple of forced closures while using the YouTube App for the first time but these glitches smoothened out in quick time. There’s 64GB of Internal Memory and support for up to 256GB of expandable memory. We like the fact that there’s a dedicated Micro SD slot in addition to a dual SIM slot.

The One Power features a 12MP selfie camera and a 16MP + 5MP rear cam. The rear cam specs are similar to the Nokia 6.1 Plus. Camera performance was average with disappointing lowlight images. The Redmi Note 5 Pro has an edge over the One Power and the 6.1 Plus in this department.

Battery life – that’s one reason why this device wears the ‘Power’ suffix and certainly its biggest strength. The extra heft is a minor inconvenience if you’re a power hungry user who keeps your phone and display busy. For most average users, this device should last close to two days on a single charge. That’s clearly a luxury at a time when large-screen devices run out of battery in quick time. Motorola sweetens the deal with a 15W turbocharger (in the box) that fires up your device in quick time.

If you’re a power user and battery life is a major consideration, then the Motorola One Power certainly deserves your consideration. The Android One platform is another key selling point. This device is pure-play Android (the deep Google Lens integration is a case in point) with a minimalist user interface and the promise of Android 9 (a.k.a. Pie) coming mighty soon.
