Traditionally, compact smartphones have been seen as the younger, smaller, and often less capable sibling in a flagship lineup. But that's no longer the case. Over the past few years, they've evolved into the preferred choice for many who want flagship performance without having to perform hand yoga every time they need to reach the other side of the screen.

The questions, however, remain the same. Do you have to compromise on battery life? The cameras? The display? Or is a smaller footprint no longer synonymous with trade-offs? If the Vivo X300 FE is anything to go by, the answers might surprise you. I spent a month with the smartphone trying to find out. What I discovered left me pleasantly surprised.

The Touch, The Feel

The Vivo X300 FE makes a great first impression even before you power it on. The unboxing experience feels surprisingly complete, with Vivo bundling a fast charger and a colour-matched silicone case in the box. It's a nice touch, especially when most brands expect you to spend extra on accessories that aren't necessarily any better.

Once you pick up the phone, you'll immediately notice the fit and finish. A metal frame sits between two glass panels, while the matte rear keeps fingerprints to a minimum. Everything feels solid, well put together and unmistakably flagship.

What really impressed me, though, was the size. At just 191g with a 6.31-inch LTPO AMOLED display, I genuinely think Vivo has found the sweet spot. It never feels like you're using a "small" phone. Instead, it feels like a phone that's been perfectly sized for your hand. That makes a bigger difference than you'd think. Whether you're mindlessly scrolling through Instagram, reading an article or watching a YouTube video, the phone remains comfortable to hold for long stretches. The lightweight design only adds to that experience.

The AMOLED display is equally enjoyable. It's bright, vibrant and sharp, making everything from social media to Netflix look fantastic.

The camera module on the back might look a little odd to some, but I quite enjoy quirky design choices. In a market where most smartphones have started looking identical, it's refreshing to see something with a bit of personality. My only gripe is that the finish is so smooth it occasionally feels like the phone is plotting an escape from your hand or the edge of a table. Thankfully, the included case fixes that immediately, and it's good enough that you'll probably end up using it throughout your time with the phone.

The Performance 

If there's one area where the Vivo X300 FE genuinely exceeded my expectations, it's performance. Compact smartphones have traditionally come with a few compromises, and performance has often been one of them. That isn't the case here.

My review unit came with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, and throughout the month I spent with it, the phone never once felt slow or laggy. Apps opened instantly, multitasking was effortless, and whether I was juggling multiple apps, editing photos, doomscrolling social media or spending far too much time with dozens of Chrome tabs open, the X300 FE handled everything without breaking a sweat.

What's more impressive is how consistent that performance has been. In the entire month I used the phone, the only time I noticed it getting warm was during the initial setup while it was downloading apps, restoring data and indexing everything in the background. Since then, it has remained remarkably cool, even during extended gaming sessions, long camera shoots and hours of navigation.

The software experience is equally smooth. OriginOS feels far more refined than Vivo's software, with fluid animations, thoughtful features and a generally polished user experience. That said, I still think it has some catching up to do. Samsung's One UI and OPPO's ColorOS continue to feel more cohesive and mature, both visually and functionally. OriginOS is good, but it isn't quite the benchmark yet.

More importantly, the company is backing the X300 FE with four years of Android updates and seven years of security patches, ensuring the phone remains relevant long after its hardware has stopped feeling new.

The Camera

The camera hardware on the Vivo X300 FE doesn't reinvent the wheel, and that's perfectly fine. You get a 50MP primary camera, a 50MP 3x telephoto camera, an 8MP ultrawide and a 50MP autofocus selfie camera. On paper, it sounds familiar. In practice, though, Vivo has clearly spent its time refining the image processing rather than chasing bigger numbers.

Over the past month, I found myself reaching for the camera far more often than I expected. The biggest compliment I can give it is this: I never had to think twice before taking a photo. Whether it was an overcast Pune skyline, dramatic monsoon clouds rolling in, my cat refusing to cooperate, or a random building that caught my eye, the X300 FE consistently delivered images that looked ready to share.

Colours are one of Vivo's biggest strengths. They have a pleasant amount of vibrancy without crossing into the oversaturated territory that many smartphones still struggle with. Greens, in particular, look rich and lively without appearing artificial, something I noticed repeatedly while photographing fields, trees and monsoon landscapes.

Dynamic range is another highlight. Several of my shots included bright skies sitting above much darker foregrounds, and the X300 FE handled those challenging scenes impressively well. Cloud detail is retained instead of being blown out, while the shadows remain detailed enough that they don't collapse into a muddy mess. That's not an easy balancing act, especially during the monsoon when lighting changes by the minute.

The primary sensor is predictably the star of the show, producing sharp images with plenty of detail. Even when cropping into photos, textures on buildings, foliage and distant landscapes hold up remarkably well. Vivo's processing also deserves credit for keeping sharpening under control. Images look crisp without acquiring the artificial halo effect that's become common on many smartphones.

My favourite images, however, came from photographing my cat. Fur detail is excellent, whiskers remain well-defined, and the camera does a surprisingly good job of maintaining focus even when your subject has absolutely no interest in sitting still.

The 3x telephoto lens quickly became my favourite camera on the phone. It lets you isolate architectural details, frame distant subjects more creatively, and compress landscapes in ways that simply aren't possible with the primary camera. More importantly, there's very little difference in colour science between the lenses, so switching between them never feels jarring.

The only weak link is the 8MP ultrawide. It's perfectly usable in good daylight, but you can tell it isn't operating at the same level as the primary and telephoto cameras. Detail drops, dynamic range isn't quite as strong and low-light performance takes a more noticeable hit. It's not a bad camera, but it doesn't quite match the otherwise excellent imaging experience.

Night photography is another pleasant surprise. The camera keeps noise under control, preserves shadow detail well and avoids the temptation to brighten every scene into looking like daylight. Street lights remain controlled, skies retain their mood and the overall result looks natural rather than overprocessed.

If I had to sum up the X300 FE's cameras in one sentence, it'd be this: they're dependable. You stop thinking about the camera specifications and simply start taking photos, and that's probably the biggest compliment I can give any smartphone camera.

The Battery

Battery life was one of my biggest concerns going into this review. Compact phones have traditionally asked you to compromise here, but the X300 FE never once made me feel like I was carrying a smaller battery.

Despite its compact footprint, the phone comfortably lasted me an entire day, even with Vivo's High Performance Mode enabled from the very first setup. I never felt the need to switch to a battery saver or tone down my usage. 

What impressed me even more was the standby performance. This is one of those rare smartphones where the battery barely seems to move when you're not using it. Leave it on your desk for a few hours or charge it before going to bed, and you'll wake up to find the battery percentage almost exactly where you left it. It's something you don't notice until you've used a phone that gets it right, and the X300 FE absolutely does.

When you eventually do need to plug it in, Vivo's 90W FlashCharge ensures you aren't tethered to a wall for long. A quick top-up is often enough to get you through the rest of the day.

Verdict

The Vivo X300 FE proves that compact smartphones no longer have to come with compromises. It looks and feels premium, delivers consistently excellent cameras, offers dependable battery life and packs enough performance that I never once found myself wishing for more.

Sure, OriginOS still has room to grow, and the ultrawide camera isn't quite on the same level as the other sensors. But those are small compromises in what is otherwise an incredibly well-rounded smartphone.
