After making making mansplain an officially legitimate English language word last year, the Oxford Dictionary yesterday provided validity to yet another word that captures an equally annoying habit associated with the male species — manspreading. The dictionary describes it as the practice whereby a man, especially one travelling on public transport, adopts a sitting position with his legs wide apart, in such a way as to encroach on an adjacent seat or seats. Tom Hanks, appearing on the American TV show Late Late Show with James Corden in March this year provided a graphic display of the art of manspreading. And for those who are wondering what mansplain is all about, here is the meaning: (Of a man) explain (something) to someone, typically a woman, in a manner regarded as condescending or patronising.
