According to the 2018 Henley Passport Index, Japanese citizens now hold the most powerful passport in the world, as far as travel is concerned. While those from Singapore can enter 189 countries without a visa or avail of the visa on arrival, Japanese citizens can do so with 190 countries.

Japan pushed Singapore to the second spot after Myanmar granted the nation’s citizens visa-free access. Japan and Singapore are followed by Germany, France, South Korea, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Sweden and Spain. The fifth spot is filled by the United States of America and the United Kingdom. At the bottom of the list lies Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

According to USA Today, “the Henley Passport Index ranks the travel documents based on data from the International Air Transport Association, a trade association of international airlines”.
