A resort in Japan, the Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan has been in the news recently for being recognised by the Guinness World Records as the oldest hotel in the world. The hotel has been in business for over 1000 years, having been established in 705 AD!
Fortune reports that the inn has been operated by the descendants of Fujiwara Mahito who first set it in place. Which means that the Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan has been run by 52 generations of the same family. The hotel isn’t especially large but has great reviews on Trip Advisor. Their website markets the inn’s hot springs and sights such as Mt. Fuji but there isn’t much there about its history.
WIth 37 rooms, a karaoke bar and a restaurant which serves koshu beef amongst other things, the Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan is truly a place to visit for those who are all about heritage and lost history. Fortune further reports that the rooms start at 52,000 Yen – about $439 – per night.
