Who Is Nitish Kumar Reddy, The Rising Star of Indian Cricket?

Is he the next big thing?

On Wednesday night, Nitish Kumar Reddy scored a whirlwind half-century to propel India to a rather comprehensive victory  against Bangladesh. The downfall of three batters inside three overs meant Reddy had to make way to the middle long before he had anticipated. But the strokes he played as soon as he came on the crease felt like he was waiting for this opportunity for eons. The young batter is known for his six-hitting prowess in the domestic circuit, but to do this against Bangladesh in his first match tells a lot about his confidence.

Reddy showed composure that belied his age, showing great awareness of the game situation. When Reddy came out to bat, India found themselves in choppy water, where a total beyond 160-165 seemed a distant dream. But the right-handed batter played the waiting game, and once he has his eyes set, he smothered the Bangladeshi attack with brute force and panache. He smashed seven towering sixes in his 34-ball innings, which ended on 74 after he holed out to Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

Nitish Kumar Reddy Breaks Rohit Sharma's Record

He broke Rohit Sharma's record for scoring most sixes in a T20I clash against Bangladesh. The 21-year-old also became the fourth youngest Indian batter to notch a half-century in T20Is. The skipper Suryakumar Yadav lauded the youngster's knock, stating how he handled the situation well, and got the Indian innings on track from a hopeless position. If his half-century was not enough, Reddy also contributed with the ball, prising out two crucial wickets.

Who Is Nitish Kumar Reddy?

Reddy comes from Visakhapatnam, and he represents Andhra Pradesh in domestic cricket. He first came to the limelight in age-group cricket, where he scored 1237 runs at an astounding average of 171, a feat that earned him the Best Cricketer in the Under -16 category. Three years later in 2020, he would make his Ranji Trophy debut and has now become one of the most integral members of the squad. In 17 first-class cricket, Reddy has amassed 566 runs and claimed 52 dismissals. His impeccable power-hitting credentials convinced SunRisers Hyderabad to sign him for the last season of the Indian Premier League, where he played four games. As his stocks continue to rise, don't be surprised if you see him taking the Sunrisers to greater heights.
