If there’s one thing Hollywood loves other than money, it’s making movies about itself. After sharing the first look with us a couple of weeks ago, the first trailer of Damien Chazelle’s new movie Babylon is here. The cocaine-fuelled explosion of 1920s Hollywood is set for a Christmas release this year.
Leading the line here are Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, who were also seen in Tarantino’s Hollywood epic ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.’ Joining them will be Mexican actor, Diego Calva, who we assume is supposed to be the audience’s pov on the ambition and outrageous excess of Tinseltown.
Babylon is said to be Chazelle’s magnum-opus, after working on critically acclaimed movies like Whiplash and La La Land. It’ll cover the industry transition from silent films to talkies. The 2-minute-long trailer gives us a glimpse exactly into that, with Margot Robbie playing an ambitious newcomer who wants “everyone to party forever.”
Brad Pitt’s character, on the other hand, is superstar Jack Conrad, who says “You know what we have to do? We have to redefine the form, map those dreams and print them into history. Look up and say: Eureka! I am not alone” just before falling off a balcony. What’s more interesting though, is Tobey Maguire’s character is set to based on Charlie Chaplin.
Joining the two includes a cast of Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, Jean Smart, P.J. Byrne, Lukas Haas, Olivia Hamilton, Tobey Maguire, Max Minghella, Rory Scovel, Katherine Waterston, Flea, Jeff Garlin, Eric Roberts, Ethan Suplee, Samara Weaving, and Olivia Wilde.
