A fashion icon in true sense, Karl Lagerfeld passed away in Paris, France at age 85. The designer was supposedly suffering from a short illness.

Lagerfeld was absent from Chanel’s spring/summer show last month and was taken to the hospital Monday night, shortly breathing his last on Tuesday morning.

“Thanks to his creative genius, generosity and exceptional intuition, Karl Lagerfeld was ahead of his time, which widely contributed to the House of Chanel’s success throughout the world,” said Chanel CEO Alain Wertheimer in a statement. Not just Chanel, Lagerfeld’s creative genius extented to Fendi and his very own eponymous label.

Further the design house announced Virginie Viard, his deputy at fashion house Chanel, as the new creative chief.

The industry mourns the death of a true icon. Rest in peace Karl.
