PV Sindhu has returned to India after winning a historic gold medal at the BWF World Championships. “I wish I’ll get many more medals for this country. I would like to thank my fans. It is because of their blessings and love that I am here today,” the shuttler said upon arrival, according to The Times of India.
“A great moment for me. I am really very proud to be an Indian,” she added.
On Sunday, Sindhu beat Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-7 in the women’s singles final to become the first Indian to win a World Championships gold medal. The next day, she had taken to microblogging site Twitter to express her feelings and state that she had difficulty holding back her tears while the National Anthem was being played.
Sindhu also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the day.
This evening, queen of the Indian track and field, PT Usha shared an image on Twitter which has quickly gone viral. The picture is of a young Sindhu sitting on Usha’s lap.
Usha was also recently appointed to the Athletes Commission of the Asian Athlete’s Association.
