Golden Girl: Hima Das Wins Five Gold Medals in Just 18 Days
Hima Das, nicknamed ‘Dhing Express’, has been on quite a golden winning streak recently. Das, 19, has won five gold medals in less than three weeks! For the unaware, Das is an ace sprinter from the state of Assam who began her golden run on July 2. She won her first gold medal in the Poznan Athletics Grand Prix held in Poland. The next gold medal came at Kutno Athletics Meet, Poland on July 7. The third gold medal came just two days later on July 13 at the Kladno Memorial Athletics Meet in the Czech Republic. The fourth was secured at the Tabor Athletics Meet on July 17, while the fifth gold medal was awarded to Das on July 20 at Nové Město nad Metují Grand Prix. All except for the fifth gold medal were secured in 200-metre sprints while the most recent medal was secured in a 400-metre sprint.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind congratulated the ace sprinter on Twitter. Celebrities like Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor also took to Twitter to congratulate Das for her outstanding achievement.
Given the devastating situation faced by her home state of Assam, Das had recently put out a tweet urging corporates and individuals to donate to the flood-effected districts. Furthermore, she donated half her monthly salary to the flood relief efforts in Assam.
Das’ monthly salary comes from the Indian Oil Corporation, where she works as an HR officer. With her efforts, Das has proved to be a glimmer of hope and inspiration for everyone in the country.
