Meghan Markle and her husband, Prince Harry have been frequent in headlines since their cover for Time magazine’s most influential people issue.
Amongst all the accessories she paired with her simple white outfit, there was one small ring with a significant meaning.
The diamond duet pink ring is from the brand Shiffon helmed by a 24-year-old Indian-American entrepreneur Shilpa Yarlagadda.
As per Shiffon’s website, 50 per cent of profits from each pinky ring fund female entrepreneurs, as part of their mission to provide “equal access to start-up capital”. As of now, 11 companies have been funded with the proceeds.
“The adjustable pinky ring … features one small and one bigger diamond — representative of the act of paying it forward.”
“Our mission at Shiffon is to close that gender gap, particularly in entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is about taking action and learning quickly, and we want to give women the opportunity to do that while not being afraid to take risks or fail. We are optimistic that we can begin making this change. Through our efforts, we aim to financially empower a million women across the globe by 2025,” reads the website. Their efforts are in collaboration with the non-profit Startup Girl.
According to a report by CNBC, Yarlagadda had started the brand in 2017 with some of her friends when she had enrolled in a graduate program at Harvard.
The company also claims to use “recycled metals, minimal and repurposable packaging, and ethically sourced stones.”
Other influential women spotted with similar rings include Michelle Obama, Christy Turlington, Nicole Kidman and Serena Williams, who may have been the close friend who introduced Markle to the ring in the first place.
The ring in question is nestled next to her three-stone engagement ring. On her right hand, the Duchess wore her diamond pinky ring, a custom design by Lorraine Schwartz.
The pinky rings are priced between $425-$780 (or around Rs 31,000- Rs 58,000).
