A-List Wrists: Patek's Opaline Blue-Grey Goes Big This July

This chic, new-age dial finish appears to have been a favourite during one of 2024's biggest months for European sports

As much as the watch world has touted about Tiffany blue dials ad nauseam ever since 2021, I've always been an advocate of the much subtler cerulean dial launch of that year—Patek Philippe's opaline blue-grey. Cool, calm, and certainly less ostentatious than its higher-contrast cousins, the lacquered finish of these, paired with Patek's trademark embossing, lends  a certain confident coolness to the wrist, something that pairs extraordinarily well with the marque's popular white gold square-dial designs.

2024 continues this momentum with further releases in this colourway, including April's Nautilus Flyback Chronograph Reference 5980/60G-001—with particular attention devoted to its headline-grabbing blue denim strap. Its a clever, tongue-in-cheek way to dress down a near-20 lakh watch; and certainly seems to have grabbed the attention of a certain firey-tempered TV host (and part-time chef). Here's a closer look at some choice picks we've spotted recently:

Gordon Ramsay's Nautilus Flyback Chronograph

Sporting the denim-on-denim Nautilus at a historic British Grand Prix last weekend, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay complimented his outfit near-perfectly by pairing the watch with a sports tee and grey windcheater—the perfect blend of casual luxury. All we have to say is—Yes Chef!

Harry Kane's Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time

The Bayern Munich striker was spotted wearing this fresh release from Patek in the lead up to England's semi-final Euros match against Denmark—scoring big on both the pitch and on his style quotient. He's an ardent fan of the Maison—having owned several big ticket models from the brand, including a khaki green variant of the aquanut.

Zlatan Ibrahimović's Patek Philippe Nautilus Flyback Chronograph

'The' Zlatan's watch collection usually goes as big and bold as the man himself, more often than not spotted in iced-out Rolexes. He's taken a casual break from this aesthetic in a recent picture while out with a friend—opting for a triple-denim look that screams laidback luxury while sharing in Ramsay's taste in watches.
