Omega’s iconic Constellation range of women’s watches gets a modern and sophisticated update

If there is one model that stands out in Omega’s history, it has to be the Constellation. Since 1952, it has been a symbol of the very highest level of precision watchmaking, redefining the standards of measuring time with grace, beauty and class. Its story actually goes back to 1948, when Omega released its first chronometer-certified wristwatch with an automatic movement. This model was called the “Centenary”, and received such widespread acclaim from connoisseurs that Omega decided to launch a fully-established collection with the same official status. Four years later, the Constellation arrived, marking the first time that any brand had created a family of watches that consisted only of chronometers.

For 2019, the Constellation has received a comprehensive design and technology update, with 101 new models for women. The 29mm models have the Omega Master Co-Axial movement, assured by the eight stringent tests that every Master Chronometer certified watch faces before it leaves the factory. The outward craftsmanship also stands out, with the makeover touching upon every aspect of the iconic design, and keeping the “Manhattan” look – a firm favourite for almost four decades – central to the theme.

Among the first changes you will notice on the new matte-finish Constellation is polished, bevelled edges along the case and bracelet, giving the model a slimmer and more feminine appeal. The bezels are slender on each new watch, thereby providing a ‘wider’ view of the dial; they also include thinner Roman numerals, in an upright reading position. The iconic ‘claws’ have also been made slimmer, with an improved integration into the bezel and casebody. Look at the crown and you will notice that the teeth in them have been given a half-moon shape, in line with the half-moon facets of the case.

The changes on the dial are more subtle. The hands are slimline, in the shape of a skeletonized leaf in the ladies’ model, and the new indexes have been inspired by the Manhattan skyline, notably the Freedom Tower building. Two different kinds of bracelets have been introduced – the quartz models have a similar bracelet to the Constellation from 2009, whereas the 29mm Master Chronometer models have been given a more luxurious version. The new bracelet is inspired by those of the original Constellation “Manhattan” collection, featuring polished “mid-bar” links. The clasps, with domed covers with the Omega name, have been given polished half-moons and a comfort release adjustment, which allows the wearer to extend an extra 2mm of comfort when required.

On the 29mm models, the slim design is achieved by the use of domed sapphire crystal on the caseback, which absorbs the thickness of the movement’s self-winding system. For the 25mm and 28mm models, the famous observatory medallion has been used. Every 29mm Constellation model is certified at the Master Chronometer standard. This means an ultimate level of precision, performance and magnetic resistance that is peerless within the industry. Uniquely, Omega has chosen four different and inspiring women as brand ambassadors – Cindy Crawford, Nicole Kidman, Alessandra Ambrosio and Liu Shishi, who all represent the elegant qualities of the Constellation collection.
