The 1950s revival project in the watchmaking world has just found a new focus, with Vacheron Constantin's latest drop picking on all the right cues
Since its debut in 2018, Vacheron Constantin's Fiftysix collection has stood at the intersection of eras, seamlessly blending the refined aesthetics of the 1950s with contemporary design elements. The latest addition to this esteemed collection introduces a striking variation in pink gold paired with a black dial, embodying a retro-contemporary charm that continues to resonate with aficionados of fine watchmaking.
The Fiftysix collection draws inspiration from Vacheron Constantin's iconic Reference 6073, a watch first introduced in 1956 that exemplified the elegance and precision of mid-century timepieces. This new model, however, reinterprets that legacy through a modern lens. The 40mm case, crafted in 18K 5N pink gold, features lugs that subtly evoke the Maltese cross, Vacheron Constantin’s emblem, offering a nod to the brand’s rich heritage.
The black dial, a first for the Fiftysix collection, further enhances the watch's retro appeal. It features a sector-type design reminiscent of the 1950s, with a double finish—opaline at the center and sunburst on the surrounding chapter ring—that creates a captivating play of light and shadow. The warmth of the pink gold contrasts beautifully with the dial’s dark tones, while the applied Roman numerals and hour markers, also in pink gold, are coated with luminescent material for enhanced legibility in low light.
Turn the watch over, and the exhibition caseback reveals the heart of the Fiftysix Self-Winding—a Calibre 1326 self-winding movement. This in-house movement, with its Côtes de Genève finishing, is not only a testament to Vacheron Constantin’s commitment to technical excellence but also a visual delight. The openworked pink gold oscillating weight, adorned with the Maltese cross, adds a touch of sophistication and serves as a constant reminder of the Maison’s nearly 270-year legacy in haute horlogerie.
Completing the watch’s retro-contemporary look is an anthracite nubuck calfskin leather strap with ecru stitching, which perfectly complements the black dial and the rich tones of the pink gold case. The strap’s texture and color enhance the overall vintage vibe, while the 18K pink gold pin buckle, shaped like a half Maltese cross, adds a final flourish of elegance.
As Christian Selmoni, Style & Heritage Director at Vacheron Constantin, aptly notes, "The 1950s were a period of prosperity and economic growth... at Vacheron Constantin, timepieces were characterised by sophistication, clean lines and harmonious proportions." This model pays homage to that era while embracing the advancements and aesthetic preferences of today. Selmoni further emphasizes that "It is not Vacheron Constantin's mission to reproduce the past identically... the Fiftysix collection can be defined as modern with a retro touch."
Modern classic in the works? We think so.
