Should we flip a coin?
Toyota launched its ‘Hum Hai Hybrid’ campaign recently, promoting its upcoming self-charging hybrid vehicles. And if you look closely, you may notice an all-new car making brief appearances in the video.
While the details are kept hush-hush, what this new vehicle could be has divided automotive media. One renowned publication suggests that it could be a compact SUV, which will rival the Hyundai Creta, while another one believes it could be a facelifted version of the Toyota Camry.
In both cases though, Toyota’s new mysterious vehicle is confirmed to get a hybrid powertrain. This doesn’t come as a surprise considering the Indian auto market is slowly getting used to the idea of a self-charging hybrid vehicle. In fact, the new Honda City Hybrid will be the one of the first mild-hybrid offerings in the country.
If recent spy shots are to be believed, the upcoming hybrid seems to be an SUV that the company might be developing with Maruti Suzuki. The test mule see sports the same silhouette as the Toyota Corolla Cross and the RAV4. But it remains to be seen if this is a completely different model or the same one seen in the teaser.
Nonetheless, if the upcoming hybrid Toyota is indeed a compact SUV, expect it to be powered by the same mill found in the Yaris hatchback. This 1.5-litre three-cylinder, the petrol-hybrid engine makes 115hp.
As far as its debut is concerned, we expect an announcement to take place within a few months, with June being our best bet.
