The Hindi film industry has evolved when it comes to love and the stories that define it, and we are grateful for that. From one largely (ab)used formula in every other film where boy meets girl, boy-girl have a tiff, but then boy-girl fall in love, parents oppose, boy fights goons to exploring infidelity in relationships and talking about homosexuality, we’ve come a long way.

Check out these Bollywood films which depicted love stories in the most unconventional way:

Gehraiyaan

The recently released Gehraiyaan gave us a closer look at romance, life, and everything in between. Deepika Padukone plays the character of a yoga instructor looking for investors to back her yoga phone app. She falls in love with her cousin Tia’s (Ananaya Panday) fiancé.

Cocktail

Cocktail would have been a typical Bollywood love triangle had it not been for its unconventional ending. Things get complicated for Meera (Diana Penty), Veronica (Deepika Padukone), and Gautam (Saif Ali Khan) when feelings get in the way of friendship.

Tamasha

The film is all about complicated relationships and one that resonated with the audience. Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone get into a relationship only to realize that what they were looking for was within themselves.

Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui

It’s the first-ever transgender love story in Bollywood. Vaani Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana deserve a huge round of applause for getting into the skin of their characters and telling a story that has never been shown on screen before.

Piku

Deepika Padukone seems to be doing a good job of portraying realistic relationships. Piku comes with baggage, and this is seen in her romantic relationships. However, we see Deepika and Irrfan play Piku and Rana with so much conviction that their constant banter delights you. This was a ‘love’ triangle about a woman making choices concerning her romantic interest and father.

Sir

Tilotama Shome and Vivek Gomber make this film a memorable watch. It talks about what happens to a heartbroken man when he falls in love with his househelp.

Manmarziyaan

When Anurag Kashyap makes a romantic film, you know things are bound to get twisted. Rumi, Vicky, and Robi get trapped in a situation where the choice between right and wrong is painted in shades of grey. The films stars Vicky Kaushal, Tapsee Pannu and Abhishek Bachchan.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha

For the first time, we got to see how a middle-class family deals with an arranged marriage setup when their daughter-in-law turns out to be heavier than they expected. The story focuses on newly married Prem (Ayushmann Khurrana) and Sandhya (Bhumi Pednekar), who face a rocky start and go on a bumpy ride before they discover love.
