After the grand success of the Netflix release Darlings, speculations are rife that the hugely-popular Alia Bhatt starrer is getting a remake. Yes, the film will be adapted in Tamil and Telugu. While the story will remain the same, the script will be localized according to the region. Speaking of the same, producer and COO of Red Chillies Entertainment Gaurav Verma told IANS, “The film has a certain landscape which can be adapted very well in multiple languages. The process is on as we speak. The story remains the same, but we will localize it. Darlings was a story set in Mumbai, but now we will create a different world for Tamil and Telugu. We will localize the characters and their reactions.”

Interestingly, while the trend of remaking Hindi films is on a downward slope, there have been many examples of Bollywood movies getting a different adaptation. We take a look at 7 such films in the article.

AndhaDhun (2018)

Sriram Raghavan’s 2018 hit starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Radhika Apte, and Tabu was remade in multiple languages. The Telugu remake was titled Maestro, while the Malayalam remake was titled, Bhramam (2021). The two films were released last year. The Tamil remake titled Andhagan will release in 2022.

Munna Bhai MBBS (2003)

Rajkumar Hirani’s directorial debut, Munna Bhai MBBS starring Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Gracy Singh, Boman Irani, and Sunil Dutt is considered a cult classic. The film was released in Tamil as Raja MBBS in 2004, in Telugu as Shankar Dada MBBS in 2004, and then in Kannada Remake as Uppi Dada MBBS in 2006.

Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006)

Another Sanjay Dutt film that was remade in a different language was Lage Raho Munna Bhai. The sequel was released in the Telugu language as Shankar Dada Zindabad in 2007. The film starred Chiranjeevi, Srikanth, Karishma Kotak, Sayaji Shinde, and Dilip Prabhavalkar.

A Wednesday (2008)

Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher’s film was remade in Tamil as Unnaipol Oruvan. The film was released in 2009 along with a Telugu remake titled Eenadu. Kamal Haasan and Mohanlal starred in the Tamil version.

3 Idiots (2009)

The Rajkummar Hirani film was adapted in Tamil as Nanban in 2012. The original film starred Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Boman Irani. Vijay, Jiiva, Srikanth, Ileana D’Cruz and Sathyaraj were cast in the remake.

Band Baaja Baaraat (2010)

Ranveer Singh’s acting debut Band Baaja Baaraat co-starring Anushka Sharma was also remade in two languages. The Tamil version was titled Aha Kalyanam (2014) while the unofficial Telugu Remake was titled Jabardasth (2013).

OMG – Oh My God (2012)

OMG – Oh My God’s Telugu Remake, Gopala Gopala, starred Venkatesh, Mithun Chakraborty, Posani Krishna Murali, Shriya Saran, and Pawan Kalyan. The Kannada version was titled Mukunda Murari. It starred Upendra, Nikita Thukral, Ravi Shankar, and Sudeep.
