Yuvraj Singh has been headlining the news ever since reports surfaced online about his brief arrest in Haryana on Saturday (October 16).  The police stated that the former cricketer was arrested as part of an investigation after a complaint was filed against him. Singh had used a casteist slur in an Instagram live video against cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal, and activist, Rajat Kalsan, found it to be quite derogatory. The Indian team player, however, got bail, within a few hours of his arrest. Interestingly, this is not the first time a cricketer has been sent to jail for breaking the law.

Amit Mishra

The Delhi Capitals leg-spinner was taken in custody by the Bangalore police in 2015. He was accused of assaulting a woman in a hotel room. Mishra was booked under the Indian Penal Code sections 354 – assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty – and 328 – causing hurt with intent to commit an offence. After three hours of interrogation, he was released on bail.

Suresh Raina

Raina was recently sent to jail when he violated the covid-19 protocols in December 2020. He was attending a party at the Dragonfly Club, Mumbai and was taken into custody after the police raided the place. Singer Guru Randhawa was also arrested. Both of them were released on bail.

S Sreesanth

The Indian pacer was a part of the infamous slap-gate scandal with Harbhajan Singh. During IPL 2013, he was found guilty of engaging with bookies and has been banned to play for life by BCCI. He had even spent a month in Tihar jail before getting released due to lack of proper evidence. His ban was also reduced to seven years after he made an appeal with BCCI. His ban was lifted on September 13, 2020.

Navjyot Singh Sidhu

Sindhu was charged with punishable homicide not amounting to murder in a case of road rage. He had allegedly beaten up a local Patiala resident in 1998, who was declared dead when taken to the hospital. In 1999, Sidhu was acquitted by the court but seven years later, the charges were brought up once again and this time, he was charged guilty of murder. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison. The former cricketer appealed the verdict after which SC stayed his sentence but granted him bail.

Vinod Kambli

Kambli and his wife were booked for assaulting their maid in 2015. The victim alleged that the cricketer and his wife abused her when she asked for her salary. An FIR was filed by the police and he was booked under IPC sections 342, 34, 506, and 504.
