Instagram rolls out its new security feature to prevent users from getting abusive hate comments or unwanted emojis in their message requests. Instagram will also provide the option to not only block just an individual user, but to “pre-emptively” block any new accounts they may create.

Facebook is continuously working to tighten their policies to tackle these hateful and abusive comments or hate speech on their apps. Moreover, this came after the football players from UK spoke out about racist messages they’d received in the app. They already had this feature before for post comments, which they are trying to bring to their message requests as well.

This will add a new tool to prevent abuse in message requests, the separate inbox for messages from people you don’t already follow and will also allow to hide message requests in a separate box “containing offensive words, phrases and emojis.”

In a blog post announcing the change, Instagram said, “This tool focuses on DM requests, because this is where people usually receive abusive messages, unlike your regular DM inbox, where you receive messages from friends.”

The post also explains, “We understand the impact that abusive content — whether its racist, sexist, homophobic, or any kind of abuse — can have on people, nobody should have to experience that on Instagram.”

Another feature which Instagram is focusing on is that if once you have blocked an individual, it will be difficult for that individual to touch base again through a new account. Instagram says it will begin rolling out these features in “several countries in the coming weeks”, and will look to expand globally in the next few months.
