The 93rd Academy Awards might have been a delayed night and a delayed season because of the pandemic altogether, but it was a meriting event as we witnessed some historic wins at the Oscars. The ceremony played out in person with a reserved guest list, and safety precautions in place. Stars gathered looking their best, and took away awards in several categories during the award night. The list of Oscars 2021 memorable wins include Nomadland’s Chloe Zhao winning the Best Director Oscar, Yuh-Jung Youn receiving the Best Supporting Actress award for Minari, and more.

On-the-road drama, Nomadland, triumphed with a win for best picture, best actress, and four other awards in different categories. “Please watch our movie on the largest screen possible and one day soon take everyone you know, shoulder-to-shoulder, in that dark space and watch every film that’s represented here tonight,” Nomadnland’s lead actress Frances McDormand, said in her acceptance speech, while winning two Oscars for picture and actress. McDormand’s win was big, but the film’s director, Chloe Zhao, created history at the 93rd Academy Awards.

Chloe Zhao, who bagged the award for Best Director for Nomadland, became the second woman to win the Best Director trophy. She is also the first person of colour to take away the trophy and is also the first Chinese woman to do so. Not just that, Zhao is the first director from the MCU’s wing to win a Best Director Oscar. A historic win, indeed.

Apart from Zhao, other Oscars 2021 memorable wins include Yuh-Jung Youn bagging the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Minari. The actress is the first Korean star to take away the trophy. Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson also created history by bagging the award for Makeup And Styling for Mai Rainey’s Black Bottom. They became the first Black women to win in this category.

83 -year-old, Anthony Hopkins picked up the Best Actor Oscar for The Father and became the oldest winner in the Best Actor category at the Oscars. This is Hopkins’ second win in the same category after The Silence Of The Lambs. This was also the most surprising win at the Oscars as many speculated that the award for Best Actor would probably go to late actor Chadwick Boseman, while Hopkins’ win seemed like an afterthought.

Emerald Fennell took away the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Promising Young Woman, making her the first woman since 2007 to win the award. Thanking her lead star, Fennell said, “I want to thank Carey Mulligan not only for being the most talented person in the world but the kindest and the funniest.”

In the past, the Academy Awards have been accused of being biased and what not. Back in 2015, the hashtag  #OscarsAllWhite also started to trend online, with many Hollywood actors protesting against the biases. The awards were criticised for not nominating women directors, people of colour, and more. This time around the Academy Award jury made sure they keep these points in mind and had a vast range of nominations and wins. Oscars 2021 was a historic event indeed.
