The Indian film industry has surprised us in several ways. It has not just given us hits at the box office but also earned recognition on an international level. Bollywood’s select few — and a handful of Indian blockbuster films — have managed to set Guinness World Records, and it’s a matter of pride for us and the industry.
Let’s take a look at 10 such examples that made us proud:
Shah Rukh Khan
There’s a reason why Shah Rukh is called the ‘King Khan Of Bollywood’. He has not only ruled our hearts with his acting skills but he’s also made it to the Guinness Book of Records. The actor became a massive name for his sky-high earnings in the Bollywood industry, which was Rs 220.5 crore in 2013 (2.2 bn rupees; £22.08 m; $37.06 m).
Amitabh Bachchan who has been ruling in the industry for over 50 years, holds a record for signing ‘Shri Hanuman Chalisa’ composed by Shekhar Ravjiani of the Vishal-Shekhar musical duo along with 19 other popular singers which included Aadesh Shrivastava, Abhijit, Babul Supriyo, Hansraj Hans, Kailash Kher, Kay Kay, Kumar Sanu, Kunal Ganjawala, Manoj Tiwari, Mukul Aggarwal, Prasoon Joshi, Roopkumar Rathod, Shaan, Shankar Mahadevan, Sonu Nigam, Sukhwinder Singh, Suresh Wadkar, Udit Narayan and Vinod Rathod.
Like his father, Abhishek Bachchan too made it to the Guinness world records. While promoting his film Delhi 6 in 2009, Abhishek Bachchan broke the existing Guinness record of German actors Jorgen Vogel and Daniel Brohl for making the highest number of public appearances by a film star in different cities in 12 hours. He travelled 1,800 km in just under 12 hours by car and private jet. And that’s not all, he set another Guinness world record when he reversed real-life roles, and played father to Amitabh Bachchan in Paa.
Kumar Sanu whose songs were all the rage back in the ‘90s also holds a Guinness world record. He is famous for songs like Ab Tere Bin (Aashiqui), Sochenge Tumhe Pyaar (Deewana), Mera Dil Bhi (Saajan), Dheere Dheere Pyaar (Phool Aur Kaante), Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen (Baazigar), Tujhe Dekha To (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge), Ek Ladki Ko Dekha (1942: A Love Story), etc. The singer holds a world record for recording the highest number of songs (28) in a single day in 1993.
Asha Bhosle is probably one of the biggest playback singers in the industry. With a singing career that spanned over seven decades, it’s no surprise that she has set a Guinness world record. Asha holds the world record for recording the most (more than 11000) solo, duets, and chorus-backed songs in over 20 Indian languages. She has innumerable hit songs to her credit like Jaaiye Aap Kahan (Mere Sanam), Dum Maro Dum (Hare Rama Hare Krishna), Piya Tu Ab To Aaja (Caravan), Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko (Yaadon Ki Baraat), Ho Jaa Rangeela Re (Rangeela), and more.
The Kapoor Family
The Kapoors made the Guinness world record for having the most members from a family to be part of the Bollywood industry. The Kapoor family is regarded as the first family of Bollywood who’ve dominated the silver screen since 1929 to date. It started with Prithviraj Kapoor who was followed by his three sons Raj, Shammi, and Shashi. Ranbir Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor are the grand-children of Prithviraj Kapoor. They have been in the record book since 1999. They collectively have had more than 25 actors in the family.
Baahubali: The Beginning
Apart from being one of the highest-grossing movies, Baahubali: The Beginning has the Guinness world record for creating a massive poster of almost 50,000 sq ft. With an area of 4,793.65 m², this was achieved by Global United Media Company Pvt Ltd in Kochi and it replaced the earlier record of Boss.
Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai
Hrithik Roshan’s debut movie Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai is etched in our hearts. The film was not just a box office hit but also holds a Guinness World Record for winning almost 102 awards. Not only did Hrithik take home the award for the Best debut actor, but he also won the best actor at the same time.
