Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey has sent a shockwave globally. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made some shocking revelations about the royal family during their tell-all interview, and the Suits actress did not hold back from talking about the atrocities she faced. While talking about her 22-month-old son Archie Harrison, she even gave the real reason why he wasn’t given a title by the royal family.
Back in 2019, the couple had announced that they have decided for their little one to not have a royal title. However, when speaking to Oprah, the Duchess revealed that it was not even Markle and Harry’s decision to make. “In the months when I was pregnant, all around the same time, so we have in tandem the conversation of he won’t be given security, he’s not going to be given a title, and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.” Traditionally, the grandchildren of the monarch are given a title automatically, but Archie was deprived of that security and protection. “It’s not their right to take it away,” Markle added.
“Even though I have a lot of clarity on what comes with the titles, good and bad, and, from my experience, a lot of pain. I, again, wouldn’t wish pain on my child, but that is their birthright to then make a choice about,” added Markle. She also revealed that she was not even given a reason back then as to why the decision was made.
Markle went on to say that she only wanted a title for his baby boy because it would have provided him with protection. “I’ve been a waitress, an actress, a princess, a duchess, I’ve always just still been Meghan. So for me, I am clear on who I am independent of that stuff, and the most important title I will ever have is Mom. I know that. But the idea of our son not being safe, and also the idea that the first member of colour in this family not being titled in the same way that other grandchildren would be…”
Prince Harry was elated to be sitting with Markle for the interview. He remembered his mother, Princess Diana, and talked about how difficult it must have been for her sitting for an interview all those years ago. “Because I can’t imagine what it must have been like for her going through this process by herself all those years ago,” he said.
