Despite the general excitement over the upcoming Friends reunion special, co-creator Marta Kauffman wasn’t originally a fan of the idea of a reboot. Friends reunion special will be available soon for super fans out there but Kauffman originally turned down the thought.

Kauffman didn’t like the idea at first. She spoke at the 2016 Austin Film Festival on a panel dedicated to her beloved sitcom, explaining that the nature of the show meant that a reunion or reboot wouldn’t make sense for the plot. “The show is about that time in your life when your friends are your family,” she said. Once Monica and Chandler decided to leave the apartment to raise their own family, she reasoned, the series had to come to an end.” She further added: “[The characters] would all be older, and it wouldn’t be the same, and people will only end up feeling disappointed, and then I’ll be embarrassed, and it would be terrible,” she said during the panel.

She created the series along with David Crane, Monica, Ross, Rachel, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe navigated life and love in Manhattan, Friends became one of the most popular television shows of all time. The show went on for ten successful seasons, wrapping up in 2004.

Now, more than 15 years since the final episode aired, a reunion special is in the works.  The reunion special won’t feature the cast reprising their character roles in a new episode but fans will see them reminisce on the show, share behind-the-scenes moments, and more. It was supposed to air on the HBO Max streaming platform in May 2021 but everything was pushed forward and on hold multiple times due to the coronavirus pandemic, and while the filming is finished, there is no official release date.
